In recent years, cannabis and products with cannabis components are one of the hot subject in the life sciences industry. Understanding the cannabis industry in Thailand is not meant for everyone to start like other agricultural produce, it is also a new conversation to many investors. But some large conglomerate has already started their new diversification and investment into this space. Charoen Pokphand Group, one of Thailand top conglomerate, has announced a collaboration with #Maejo University, the country's oldest agricultural institution, to advance research and development opportunities in the hemp field.

In December 2018, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize cannabis use for medicinal purposes, Thai government considered the positive effects of the legalization of cannabis for medical use, outweighed the negative impact. In January 2021, the government of Thailand laid down business guidelines for the use of cannabis and hemp for medicinal, food, and cosmetic purposes. The new announcement, the certain part of cannabis was no longer the narcotic Schedule 5, including the bark, trunk, fiber, branch, root, leave without bud or blossom, extract containing cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) not exceeding 0.2% or residues after the extraction, containing THC not exceeding 0.2%. However, those parts must come from the cannabis legally grown in Thailand.
Interestingly, it has announced Thai households can now grow up to six pots of cannabis each to supplement their income, families may form communities to grow marijuana and supply the crop to public hospitals and state facilities, or use them to make food and cosmetic products as a fresh revenue source.
